Another Update

I guess it's been almost a month, so I have a month's worth of reporting to do. Here goes...

-Mock Trial officially kicked off. Ogallala Black team now has two wins under their belts. Ogallala Orange has had two very close meets, which, unfortunately ended in defeats. Seeing as they have had to play two varsity teams though, they are doing awesome! Ogallala White has had a rough season with several people quitting unexpectedly in the days before their first trial.

-The OG Marching Band had a superior season. Get it? We ended up with a superior on the field at the esteemed Harvest of Harmony Competition, we had several stunning performances at our home football games, and we basically swept all the awards at the Old West marching competition in Scottsbluff. (Street: superior. Field: superior. Plus, we won the Class Act Award which means that we were all around classy. So yeah.)

-The OHS choral department has adjusted (you could say) to our new director, and had our first choir concert of the season. It went well.

-I tried out for All-State band (on clarinet) and choir (as a Bass I.) I made the choir!! I was so excited. Of all the kids that tried out for band and choir, all but two made it.

-One-Act and Jazz Band have just begun, and will just add to my already crazy schedule.

-My classes are going well. Except that in all but one we are simply regurgitating textbook information, which is really hard for me. I find that I am simply not motivated to do my assignments, but I do them anyway. My band, choir, and government classes are enjoyable because of two reasons. One: they involve music, or two: they challenge me to think. I almost cried in my English class today. We are working on Herman Melville, so naturally the teacher has us pull up the Sparknotes on Moby Dick to browse for a while, and then we proceeded to watching the movie. We have never even touched to novels. English classes are supposed to study literature, not watch the movies that are inspired by it. There is an art to crafting words so that they ring just right that no one these days appreciates. And what am I supposed to get out of a movie? A wasted class period? Time to do my homework for my other classes? It's just downright frustrating. Plus, I have not written anything in that class. No essays. No short stories. No poems. Nothing. I thought the purpose of an English class is to show you great works of literature, so that you can better your own writing. We have looked into several movies and have had no opportunity to think for ourselves. It was the same story with The Scarlett Letter by Hawthorne. Movie. Notes on the movie. Test. Call me crazy, but I thought books and the movies that present the stories in living color tended to have discrepancies in the details. But whatever.

I guess now you might have a slight idea why I haven't posted for almost a month. I'm so crazy busy I haven't had the time between extracurriculars and homework. I'm not trick or treating because I don't live in town and Wednesday is my only night home. I need to go practice piano now, so my teacher won't be disappointed in my monthly average. (It is usually around 2.1 practices per week which is waaayyy below the expected five.) Oh well. Until next time...

  1. You didn't read The Scarlet Letter?!? Blurg!!! That book is so good; I'm teaching it right now. Do you have a copy? You should read it! Sorry to hear your classes are a drag. Hope it gets better!
